What Is the OptiLight by Lumenis & How Can It Manage Your Dry Eye?

Dry eye disease is a widespread and common issue for up to 49 million Americans. This chronic condition can have a significant impact on your quality of life, causing a foreign body sensation in your eyes, pain, blurry vision, and dry or watery eyes. Untreated, it can even lead to further eye health complications.
Despite these constant detrimental effects on quality of life, many dry eye sufferers are not aware that they’re suffering from dry eye disease or that real treatments exist. Instead, they just live with the discomfort.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive solutions for a range of eye issues, we’ve invested in state-of-the-art dry eye technologies to bring your the eye comfort you deserve.
We’re proud to offer OptiLight by Lumenis to our patients, specially designed for dry eye management.

What Is OptiLight by Lumenis?

OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The first and only IPL FDA-approved for dry eye management.

The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.

How Does It Work?

OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear break-up time, and increase meibomian gland functionality.

This application can significantly relieve dry eye indicators and has a multi-factorial effect, including:
Increasing tear break-up time:
  • Reducing the amount of demodex mites and bacteria living around your eyes
  • Eliminating blood vessels that contribute to inflammation
  • Improving meibomian gland functionality

What to Expect

Before Your Treatment

Eye exams are the first step towards treating dry, uncomfortable eyes. During the eye exam, we’ll get a clear view of your eye health with the help of various technologies, including the health of the structures that support and produce your tears. Once we determine what may be causing your symptoms, we can recommend a treatment that may include OptiLight IPL therapy.

One of the many benefits of OptiLight IPL therapy is that is also highly effective in treating skin conditions, including:

If any of these are concerns for you, let us know during your exam and we can assess whether or not OptiLight IPL Therapy can help!

Following your exam, we’ll book your treatment date and go over what you can expect from your session. For 2 weeks leading up to your treatment, please avoid excessive sun exposure, use sunscreen, and refrain from using antibiotics or retinol medications.

When you come in for your OptiLight treatment, please ensure you arrive 30–45 minutes early and without any makeup, sunscreen, or moisturizer on your face. If you do, we’ll happily provide sensitive skin wipes to clean your face with before preparing you for your appointment.

During Your Treatment

This treatment is fast and simple. During the treatment your doctor will apply a coupling gel on the treatment area and cover your eyes with shields.

As light is applied to the skin, you may experience a warm sensation. The treatment is gentle with minimum discomfort. The treatment itself will only take 10–15 minutes.

After Your Treatment

Following your OptiLight treatment, your skin may be a little pink and tender. In some cases, you might experience sunburn-like symptoms like peeling or redness, but these are completely normal and should disappear within a few days.

Before you leave, we’ll book your next session and apply some sunscreen to your treated skin to protect it from harmful UV rays.

Part of Your Custom Treatment Plan

A course of treatment typically includes 4 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart.

We may recommend eye drops to help you alleviate any additional dry eye symptoms, but IPL therapy is known for providing deep, long-lasting relief. After you complete your sessions, we’ll perform a final exam to check how you are responding to treatment and if any other actions are necessary.

Will the OptiLight by Lumenis Work for Me?

While OptiLight by Lumenis is an effective dry eye management solution, we want to make sure it’s right for you. We do not recommend this treatment if you:

  • Suffer from aqueous deficiency dry eye (rather than evaporative dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction)
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have severe scarring around your eyes

Ultimately, your doctor is the only person who can determine whether this option is right for you. During your next appointment, ask us if you are a good candidate for OptiLight by Lumenis.

The OptiLight is a great “drug-free” treatment for dry eye! I invested in the technology because I’ve suffered from dry eye for the last 15 years. Dry eye is a chronic condition that I have had to treat with expensive prescription eye drops everyday. After four treatments with the OptiLight, I no longer have to use my prescription eye drops!

This technology is a game changer! I love to be able to give my patients a drug free alternative for dry eye treatment.
